Brick walls accomplish two things; they form load bearing walls and they can also be used as a partition. Whatever the case, over a long time, the bricks will deteriorate and the mortar will break down. While this can be a very large problem, it is not a fatal problem. What you may have to have done is called Tuckpointing. This will make sure that there is no structural problems and that you will not have to compromise the safety of the house. What happens with Tuckpointing is that the exposed mortar is repaired or replaced. This will strengthen the mortar and prevent any further deterioration. Another form of this procedure is also called lintel replacement. It, too, will arrest the degradation that can lead to your walls falling down.
Addition to the weakening of the wall, there are aesthetic concerns. While strengthening the wall, Tuckpointing and lintel replacement can really brighten up the outside of a house. The cement and wall can go through changes. They can crack for a variety of reasons; all the way from the settling of a house to improperly installed masonry. One of the most serious problems you can encounter is when a wall bows out. It's possible that the entire wall may have to be replaced if this occurs. Lintel replacement and tuckpointing will head off this problem before it gets so bad.
You also may encounter something called crazing. It is when the mortar has been exposed to repeated heat and cold. The years of expansion and contraction have made cracks in the mortar. If left untreated they can grow until the structure of the wall is compromised. In this procedure, tuckpointing begins by scraping the mortar away, usually around 14 of an inch, then fresh mortar will be placed into the space where the old damage mortar was previously. What is being created is a new finish over the old mortar. This will make a watertight seal as well as increasing the beauty of the house. Lintel replacement is slightly different but will accomplish much of the same thing.
Lintel replacement does have one difference over tuckpointing. It should be done on a fairly regular basis. Doors and windows, by their very nature mbt shoes clearance , are exposed to greater changes in temperature than almost any other part of a house. They will loosen faster than almost anything else. The lintel, that piece of metal that is positioned above a door frame or a window, will help seal these cracks. Corrosion and expansion will turn this tight seal into an ill fitting part. The best long-term solution is simply to replace the lintel.
Whether the changes in the bricks and mortar have damaged the walls, or there is corrosion on a lintel, Tuckpointing and lintel replacement will not only beautify your home it will preserve it as one of your largest investments. It will continue to enrich your life and remained strong enough to pass onto your children and grandchildren.
